Family, Friends, Colegas and FB peepers…: ) After 8 years of serving children, families and staff on the Anaheim City School District Board of Education I have decided not to file for re-election to the Board. I am grateful for all the supportive parents, teachers, classified staff and community partners who work so hard every day to improve the lives and futures of our children. My decision to leave the School Board is out of the urgent need to fight for our children, families and neighborhoods in our City. Therefore, I have decided to file papers to run for the Anaheim City Council. As many of you know, my family and I have committed ourselves to advocating and fighting to improve the lives of children, families and neighborhoods. We have joined with many in our community with the earnest belief that education is the gateway to community empowerment and self-determination. However, quality education is not achieved in a vacuum—it is part and parcel of broader social and political systems. This is particularly true in resort cities like Anaheim—where our City leaders invest more in the children of tourists than our children who live in Anaheim. We have much to be proud of in Anaheim but we cannot sit by while City leaders continue to advocate for and authorize hundreds of millions in corporate subsidies and giveaways to their friends and campaign contributors. We must find balance on the Council which is why we need authentic districts in Anaheim and voices to insure Districts are constructed with all of Anaheim in mind. I have committed to running for City Council in this cycle to fight for more representative local government and to fight for neglected neighborhoods; neglected small businesses; neglected city services and staff; and neglected families and youth. We are excited about the race for Council and while many have said it is too difficult of a road, we say, “Let’s do this Anaheim…Let’s make history!” Email blasts and press releases are forthcoming.
