Fanny Crosbys words here sure do make an embarrassment out of the professing Christian musicians we have today who are in love with the limelight and the money. My mother and I have become so repulsed by what we see in this Bible belt Music City of the world. There is no question about it. Satan is not wasting his time on people who have already done rejected Jesus. He is on the war path to destroy the church, the preachers, and all of the great talents who profess to be Christian. Mom and I will never again purchase music from any of these artists. So many have beautiful voices and are outstanding on various instruments but they have nearly all left the straight and narrow. I am not sure what year Fanny made these statements but we are now seeing her concerns manifest. We have churches playing secular music from the pulpit, and money has become the master to many whether they admit to it or not. I think they try to defend what they are doing by convincing themselves that they are working for the Lord while they suck up all the publicity, popularity and money. Peoples actions and behavior often tell another story. Satan is slick at deceiving one into believing all sorts of lies. Just like the preachers who misuse church funds for personal gain and twist doctrine, I see the same thing happening with professing Christian musicians. Everything going on is so fouled up. -D- There must always be a distinction between secular and religious music. Secular music speaks to the emotions. The songs we hear in church must speak to the heart... Sometimes I need to reject the music proposed for my songs because the musicians misunderstand. They think that the Fanny Crosby who once wrote for the people in the saloons has merely changed the lyrics. Oh my no! The church must NEVER sing its melodies to the world... Gold is good in its place but when it becomes our master it weaves a crown of thorns upon the brow that crushes even the strongest to the earth. Better a man without money than money without the man. I sense the church will be closer to the world. I dread to think what the status may be fifty years from now, or one hundred. A nation will crumble without the foundation of good Christian homes. I will tell you this. People get BAD THEOLOGY as much from HYMNS as they do from sermons. Martin Luther realized this. -Fanny Crosby, Christian Poet and Hymn Writer (March 24 1820 – February 12 1915)
