Fashion faux pas. It’s often said that the wearing of a clip-on tie is the definition of tacky. The only people that can justify wearing such a thing are police officers (to look neat, but avoid getting choked to death by some scumbag) and engineers (who would like to avoid being pulled into machinery). Of course, there’s a third group which I fell into: dorks that don’t know how to tie a tie. OK, I can tie a regular tie thanks to being forced to learn while I was in the Army, but all during my youth either my dad had to tie it or I wore a clip-on, usually a bow tie because it was easier. Of course, there are some unfortunate guys who can’t tie one due to amputation, stroke, etc. I’ll cut them some slack. With that in mind, on this day, 1928, the dang thing was designed. Now, nobody knows who did it – how the hell do they know it was designed on this day? Anyhow, it didn’t catch on until after WWII. And I still wear a clip-on bow tie when required for more formal wear during certain concerts.
