Fast or Slow Twitch? You have two general types of muscle fibers: slow-twitch and fast-twitch. Slow-twitch muscles enable lower intensity, higher endurance movements such as distance running, while fast-twitch muscles fatigue faster, but are used in more powerful movements such as sprinting. During aerobic exercises such as running or swimming, slow-twitch fibers are the first to contract. When the slow-twitch fibers become tired, fast-twitch muscles begin to take over. During high-intensity exercises that require quick, powerful movements, fast-twitch muscles contract first. Aerobic slow-twitch exercises increase stamina and oxygen supply, allowing the body to burn energy for longer periods of time. Fast-twitch exercises, like todays Beast Mode routine, burn considerably more energy in less time, and lead to gains in muscle mass that triggers weight loss, lowers blood pressure, and improves strength.
