Fathers’ day is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month of June to honour dads, grandfathers, stepdads and all men who serve as father figures. The idea of Father’s Day came from Sonora Smart Dodd in 1909. She wanted a special day to honour her father, William. Her mother died during childbirth with her sixth child. William was left to raise the newborn and five other children by himself on a Washington farm. Studies show that it is beneficial to both the father and the children when the father is involved in his children’s lives, as it has a very positive effect on the father-child relationship. SOME QAULITIES OF A GOOD FATHER 1. Stick around as a father Fathers are encouraged to spend more quality time with their families. As a father, take your family out, e.g. for shopping and assisting with household chores whenever possible. Take some time to attend some of your children’s activities. 2. Respect your family You cannot have good relationships without respect. As a father, value and acknowledge the input and positive contributions of your family in your life. 3. Have fun You cannot always take life seriously, make time to go out and play with your children. Spend quality time with your family. There is a myth that fathers are just there to instill order and discipline in their children. This has resulted in children not opening up and sharing their problems with their fathers. As a father you need to show love in a practical manner to your children. Build positive memories with your children! 4. Show compassion and love as a father Children need to know their fathers are genuinely interested in them and love them. Studies have shown that today’s life is posing great challenges to the children, which at times make them lose hope in life. Fathers are entrusted with the responsibility of showing love, concern and guidance to their children. 5. Display good ethics in whatever you do It is important to show good ethics to your children. It is difficult to expect children to behave ethically if you as the father are not leading by example. Remember children imitate our behaviour as parents! Children copy their parents as role models, therefore part of being a good father, is being a good role model for your children. Telling and showing your children your values and what you stand for, as well as living up to those values and standards are of critical importance. 6. Be firm but fair as a father Children thrive with boundaries and need to know what to expect, as this gives them emotional security. Fathers should stand for what they believe in, and children need to be informed when they are stepping out of line. 7. Own up to your mistakes Children learn by example, being able to admit your flaws go a long way. Children need to know that as a father, you are also a human being who can make mistakes. When you own up to those mistakes, your children will respect you for taking ownership of such mistakes. 8. Make your children feel protected The world that we are living in can be very hostile at times and children are not immune to this hostility. From time immemorial fathers have been regarded as a source of protection for their children. So, as good fathers make sure that this role is not neglected. TO ALL THE FATHERS OUT THERE, THIS IS A FATHER’S WEEK……A RARE OCCASION….
