And in Todays Canadian Birthdays: Adrienne Clarkson 1939 - broadcaster, born Adrienne Poy on this day at Hong Kong in 1939. Clarkson came to Canada with her parents in 1942 following the Japanese invasion. After getting an MA from the University of Toronto, she attended the Sorbonne in Paris, then returned to Toronto in 1965, where she started her TV career as a CBC host of such shows as Take Thirty, Adrienne at Large and the Fifth Estate. After stints as a novelist, diplomat and publisher, she returned to broadcasting in 1989 as host of the arts show, Adrienne Clarkson Presents. [Photo: CBC, Fred Phipps] Gilbert Labine 1890-1977 - prospector, was born on this day in 1890 at Westmeath in the Ottawa Valley; died in Toronto June 8, 1977. Labine is known for his discovery of the pitchblende (radium) deposits on Great Bear Lake in 1930, and his establishment of the Eldorado refinery in Port Hope, Ontario in 1933.
