February 2, 2014: Evening - Freezing rain, sleet, and snow cover - TopicsExpress

February 2, 2014: Evening - Freezing rain, sleet, and snow cover much of the area at this time. Pretty much on track with precipitation placement - less amounts north and more south. Continue to center highest accumulations from the MO/AR border into far southern IL and west KY - then north and east from there. Several inches of snow has fallen over the past few hours. Snowfall rates of 1 per hour and greater are being experienced in the heaviest bands. Areas that are sleet are not accumulated as much (as is always the case). Sleet will change to snow through the evening hours. Widespread 2-4 of snow for southeast MO - western KY - far southern IL - with pockets of 4-8 where banding occurs. VERY bad road conditions are being reported over the area. NUMEROUS wrecks have been reported by emergency management. Roads will not improve tonight. Many schools will be closed tomorrow. Snow will end late tonight and temps will fall into the upper teens and/or lower twenties. Tomorrow morning will not be nice. Ice storm threat appears to be increasing for Tuesday - mainly afternoon and evening. Temperatures are going to be influenced by the storm track and the snow pack. PLAN for an ice storm with short term power outages and then hope for rain. Ice accumulation on power lines and trees should be in the 0.30-0.60 range. Tough call on accumulation because of temperatures. We can have decent freezing rain accumulation at 30-31-32 degrees. Matter of fact some studies have shown that to be ideal temperature for ice to accumulate. PARTS of the region may remain mostly rain on Tuesday. That is a big big question mark. Stay tuned and monitor updates. PLAN accordingly and hope for the best. Pipe busting cold possible behind the storm with single digits once again possible by Thursday morning and maybe Friday morning. Another winter storm possible late in the week. Share if possible.
