Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt says Australia is seeking to recover all of the costs associated with a rescue mission in Antarctic waters. Icebreaker Aurora Australis delivered 52 passengers and crew to Hobart yesterday, after their Russian ship Akademik Shokalskiy became stuck in Commonwealth Bay on Christmas Eve. The Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) had set out to retrace the journey of Douglas Mawson before the ship became ice-bound with both scientists and paying passengers onboard. There has been significant disruption to the Australian Antarctic program because of the actions of those on board, and in particular the fact that the ship was frozen in, Mr Hunt said. I think we have a duty on behalf of taxpayers that we seek full cost recovery.
