Field Trip: Tohoku New Zealand Village justdubsonline.net/dubtopia-field-trip/tohoku-new-zealand-village The last of a series of New Zealand themed amusement parks is barely hanging on to its strange vision According to this strange, deteriorating Japanese theme park, New Zealand is a land of alpacas, sausage-making, quaint architecture, and not much else. A derelict amusement park operating in north eastern Japan. Tohoku New Zealand Village has a theme that is stated to be based on the culture of New Zealand, but doesnt seem to have a strong idea of what that means. The park boasts a small collection of farm animals including llamas, sheep, and even hamsters. The menagerie seems to be the parks main attraction, but there are also a number of broken-down and rusting attractions scattered around the grounds. Assumedly in preparation for a wave of interest in New Zealand culture that never came, there were originally four New Zealand Village parks built but, due to low admission numbers, the Tohoku Village is the only one that remains open. Nestled in the mountains of Iwate the park is peaceful and surreal. Many of the buildings, built to resemble a quaint cartoon version of European architecture have been closed and left to the elements. Old sausage-making shops, and broken rides sit silently as the parks scattered guests try and parse what is open and what is closed, which can sometimes be a challenge since even those buildings and attractions that remain open are ill maintained and falling apart. The Tohoku New Zealand Village seems as though it may have been an overly ambitious attempt to jump on a trend that never materialized but it is now aging into a modern ruin should it ever close its doors.
