Figurine WIP/ tutorial part 3 wings Here comes the WIP tutorial of wings for figurine, you may need to find good reference of bird wings, close up shoots of feathers for better result. Enjoy!! Some tips during the progress: *Use jumbo paperclips as the wire of armature. Bend them to the right angle and shape. *Apply very thin layer of clay to the wires, Be sure to make them curved according to the real wings. *Check every angles, compare with your figurine, make sure the size and scale are your preferred proportion. *Bake the wing armatures with some supports to keep the shape. Believe me, youll be sorry if you bake the clay without the supportive blocks... *Check and compare the shape of both wings, compare the wings with your figurine. Adjust the clay and wires if necessary, you can bend them easily at this stage but carefully. Use a little crazy glue if it breaks. *Apply very thin layer of the Sculpey clay softener, it helps the clay to stick on, the wings wont be thick after all, and thin clay might easily get air lumps between hardened clay and soft clay. Cut open, punch holes to get rid of the air lumps and press it back on if it happens. *Apply the clay in layers like real feathers. Make sure build them up in right direction and angles of the inner and outer wings patiently. The inner feathers is concave, and the outer is protruding. *You might need to check them back and forth for the same thickness but opposite of wings frequently. *Dont go to the details of feathers (lines) if the feathers are not evenly organized. *Dig out the clay if you dont like the layers, I cut the edges of wings and redone it because I felt that I preferred round ends instead of pointed eagle wings. Well, just fix it if you find somethin you dont like! *When the layers of feathers look good, put both wings closer so you know they are in the same condition of details. Just trim them if you find anything wrong, dont be lazy! ^^ *Before making the detail lines, you may apply some nail polish remover. It makes the surface a bit harden and not too sticky. *Make the lines of feathers according to real feather, and try making them naturally, flat but sharp spoon tool, pointed tool work ok, twist the tools a little, make the lines uneven, otherwise they will look like broken banana leaves if you know what I mean... =_= Stay tuned, to be continued... ------------------------------------------------ Many friends had asked me How do you make figurines, can you show me the process? I had therefore made a tutorial that divided in several areas of the figurine while I was working on a self project, a project that wasnt base on commission, actually they were sort of work in progress. You may see a lot of photos taking during sculpting. Its long hours of work that I did beside my work. Please look for yourself and compare the differences of how it was made. I tried taking shoots as many as I can at the turning points in angles. I know you might have a lot of questions, the materials, tools, methods... I would suggest you may look for my other tutorials for commonly asked questions. I dont really know how long this project may take. But Ill keep updated as it goes on. The pictures shown an angel figurine in progress. Enjoy! Title: It has a title but Im not going to say it now, please wait until you see the whole scene when nearly finish. Material were used: Super Sculpey, jumbo paperclips, crazy glue, baby powder.
