Heather Stabo gave me Rene Magritte Taken from ArtStory.org, which I use for a lot of bio-data sourcing and imaging. :c) While some French Surrealists led ostentatious lives, Magritte preferred the quiet anonymity of a middle-class existence, a life symbolized by the bowler-hatted men that often populate his pictures. In later years, he was castigated by his peers for some of his strategies (such as his tendency to produce multiple copies of his pictures), yet since his death his reputation has only improved. Conceptual artists have admired his use of text in images, and painters in the 1980s admired the provocative kitsch of some of his later work. He was born in November, 1898, and died in August of 1967, spending most of his life in his homeland of Belgium. Known for his opinions on keeping simplicity and the obvious in his work, he strove to create a style of non-pomp. My painting is visible images which conceal nothing...they evoke mystery and indeed when one sees one of my pictures, one asks oneself this simple question what does that mean? It does not mean anything, because mystery means nothing either, it is unknowable. Links to his works, because Id rather not post watermarked images. google/imgres?sa=X&rlz=1T4ADFA_enUS431US433&biw=1536&bih=702&tbm=isch&tbnid=paqTSaXnlSsHLM%3A&imgrefurl=http%3A%2F%2Fhistoryherstoryblog.wordpress%2Ftag%2Frene-magritte%2F&docid=p7NMQvPkNjEvJM&imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fdailyartfixx%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2010%2F11%2FThe-Lovers-II-Rene-Magritte-1928.jpg&w=800&h=584&ei=QgztUufqBsK0yAHspYCgAQ&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=2703&page=2&start=19&ndsp=31&ved=0CKsBEIQcMBo
