Films In Pants 9: Fully Clothed Films 1: Revenge of the Colon: Its Not Indian Food Its: Moon. (I realize its inherently a bit NONCE-y to write film reviews on my Facebook page but whatevs, were all friends here) Moon was recommended after I enjoyed Gattaca so much so I decided to actually watch it immediately instead of putting it off until the end of time. This entire film takes place on the moon and is essentially a one-man show, with a spot of Kevin Spacey as a disembodied computer voice -- think friendly HAL 9000; incidentally if you Google HAL 9000 the second suggested conjugation is HAL 9000 Siri which is a bit offputting if you think about it for a while. Moon was an excellent watch from start to finish and comes with the recommendations of the cat in my cover photo. He watches a lot of films from under that truck, and he doesnt wear any clothing at all. Moon, for me, was most impressive because Sam Worthington was able to act very well with/by himself. The whole premiss was hugely believable and I should really start looking into fusion as I think theres an untapped market for clean and readily available energy, I think the marketplace is crying out for it. If anyone wants to set up a portable fusion reactor with me we can take the bus to the moon and I suggest we meet tomorrow at Changwon Terminal at 8:30 am because the buses after that are always packed and we may have to stand for the 34-day bus ride. The best thing about Moon was the things left unexplained: the Korean greetings, which I felt were a little bit fueled by the Hanso Corporation from Lost and actually now I think about it the whole thing has a bit of a Desmond-ic feel to it, one man trapped in a hatch with nothing to do but whittle a scale model (scale modal?) of his home town. That was a logic reference to like, different possible worlds and stuff one of which where this H3 fusion referenced in the film would be taking place, if youre into David Lewis. The subtly edited videos of Tess. The unexplained signal jamming devices. The basement level. The casual responses of Kevin Spacey when questioned directly about things that probably have contradictory orders behind them; also the unheard conversation between the computer and Central. More things left open than Blade Runner: DC/FC. Gravity tomorrow night. Better Than: Vanilla Sky (2001) As Good As: Gattaca Worse Than: The Matrix (is it still okay to hold up The Matrix as an example of amazing sci-fi or is it passe now?)
