Films watched this week: Murder by Numbers: 7.6/10= A decent film about death, betrayal and the human condition. Fantastic performances from Ryan Gosling, Sandra Bullock, Chris Penn and that guy from Board-walk empire (dont know his name). An interesting twist (that I sort of saw coming but so what!). Pretty good movie. Mermaids: 7.6/10= A up-lifting, some-what depressing (but in a good way) film about life, love and loss. Winona Ryder is great! So is Cher and Christina Ricci (didnt even recognise her at first!). Bob Hoskins is very good too. I found this film amusing, up-lifting, insight-ful and all of things meaningful and not in that phony way. Capote: 9/10= Fantastic performance from the late great Phillip Seymour Hoffman. I found this film very moving and spoke to what this artist (Truman Capote) was trying to capture in his last book that he ever wrote (Cold Blood). The movie spends a lot of time with Hoffmans character and thats what makes the movie so great. Hes so fascinating to watch and its a great movie. I like it because I know nothing about Capote before really but now I feel like I know a lot more than I ever did before. The Burning Plain: 9/10= Great movie dealing yet again with life, love and loss. If its done well and put across in the right way and not in any way forced or repeated it works great and it certainly did so here. Charlize theron is great. Young Jennifer Lawrence is very good and I noticed a scene which in an ironic way pre-imagined her role in the Hunger games! How neat! How to make an American Quilt: 9/10= Great movie! Deals with life, love and loss but in such a way that makes you feel for these characters. Every story works and interlocks into the storyline perfectly. I particularly enjoyed seeing Jared Leto in the 1950s section, that was so great! I really loved the other story about the girl who loved to swim and fell in love, then it went all bad (which was a shame) but it just shows some-things dont work out but no-one should ever give up (which I think is this movies key message). Winona Ryder, what can I say? Youre perfect and frankly Id love to see you in movies still nowadays :).
