Finally got to see Guardians of the Galaxy and see what all the hype was about. My first instinct is to call it a throwback to a time when movies were just meant to be cool and fun, but I cant think of what time that would be throwing back to. Movies have been dour, pretentious, and political for decades now - even the kids movies. Hell, especially the kids movies. Guardians lives in that Marvel sweet spot with Avengers and the first Iron Man - kid-friendly without being exclusively for kids, funny and clever while still delivering the drama. The whole film felt like one big inside joke, almost like a vanity project, but the actors were having so much fun, it just kind of swept you up. My only complaint would be how FAST the damn thing moved. They had so much to do in a short time you had to really pay attention and keep up with it. It felt like Firefly played on fast forward with a higher budget. Like we were watching someone trying very hard to be Joss Whedon and hitting damn close to the mark. This is exactly what the superhero genre needs - the kind of irreverent humor that was sorely lacking in the new Spider-Man. Chris Pratt was inspired casting. It simply would not have worked without him. Hell, it felt like they started with Pratt and wrote the whole film around him. Hype is totally justified. Buy it fast and watch it with the kids. Youll watch it a hundred times.
