Finally, some great weather and just in time for the traditional start of the long distance running season. My marathon season kicks off on Sunday at the Tralee International Marathon. January was a frustrating month for my running training due to illness and a slight injury which confined me to the gym (not complaining, I love the gym). But I could only add road running sessions from February 1 which consisted of sessions as short as 30 mins and as long as 3 hours. Remarkably, in those 5 weeks I have lost 3kg on the scales and decreased my body fat. I have also in that time increased many of my 1RM in the gym which may suggest an increase in muscle mass! Why is this remarkable? Its remarkable because there is an increasingly vocal argument, backed up by science apparently, that states that you dont lose body fat from distance running. EACH INDIVIDUAL WILL REACT DIFFERENTLY TO DIFFERING TRAINING STIMULI. I have seen these results mirrored in many of the clients that I have worked with. There is no one stop gap training stimulus that will fulfill all your goals. There is no one answer. Keep active. Try everything. The most beneficial form of exercise is the one that you enjoy because that becomes sustainable. We thrive to do what we enjoy, right? So to all who have wondered whether to take up running; get out and enjoy the glorious weather. There is no better time of the year to be out on the roads. These are perfect running conditions. To those who run already; get out there. All that training done throughout the wintry conditions over the last few months? Nows the payoff. Enjoy what you do. Have a great day.
