Finding humility moment of the day: So I listen to a lot of audiobooks. Just another thing I can thank mama Z for. The thing about audiobooks is that the pace is set for you; you dont skip ahead and you dont skim. Also, you tend to imagine the story a little more since it happens in real time. When characters converse I tend to imagine seeing that conversation like I would in a movie. So the audiobook I am listening to now is only ok, but it turns out that the main character is an African American man. The book doesnt mention this until about half way through the book, hes a nerdy bookstore owner in a town along the Massachusetts coast. I kind of pictured him looking like Ben Stiller. The weird part is that once I attribute a look to him, its hard for me to picture someone else in later parts of the story. Thats ok because its my imagination and I can do what I want. The humbling thing is to think about what likely happens on the other side. Suppose a teenage black girl reads the Hunger Games, or the Divergent series, or something like that. All the way through she pictures Katniss Everdeen as a someone just like her and then she sees the first trailer for the Hunger Games movie and finds Jennifer Lawrence playing the character. I bet it happens so often that she eventually stops noticing, but I bet the first time it happens it really sucks. Sorry kid, Hollywood execs dont want to run the risk of losses on the next billion dollar series and the author never said she WAS black. So if you want an example of White Privilege then just recognize that unless an author specifically identifies someones race, then all of the biggest protagonists from the most popular books turned movies are white. That makes me sad. #dang #notwitteraccountforme
