Fine ambivalence...I had to perform last rites of Baba...couldnt gather strength to oppose any single custom ...all our being English teacher and all is of no use before very assertive lobbyists of so called religious practices...whatsoever deep loyalty you might have to the man whose soul departed...customs like offering moustache and hair stays... (only relief is that I assertively opposed a fair skinned famed devotee neighbour when he equated moustache offering with widows offering their locks...only pride of womanhood..he was aghast how suddenly soft spoken son of departed soul became aggressive..but overall Im ashamed..sharing that grotesque photo here in my group of scholar English teachers...I am being very candid because right after people left after feast of bhojan..I read Adam Smith just now...I felt that double standards are inevitable...I stand before students and advocate progressive ideas and fully conforming with the majority...will post this on FB and this Whatsapp ...at least a little expiation from the hypocrite act ...(Now, what mother would have done, cried n all, neighbours cursing etc...fear of that, love of religious minded Baba and living mother are all excuses my dear friends, we lack guts to actually oppose certain superstitions...thats all...at least I lacked..(next Adam Smith) :- Dr R Y Shinde (ha ha Doctor, ha ha Eng HoD) Adam Smith once said, “Science is the great antidote to the poison of enthusiasm and superstition.” What did the great economist have against enthusiasm? To find out we’ll have to go back to his time. Smith was born in 1723. The literal meaning of the word enthusiasm still applied at the time. The word is coined from Greek theos (god). So if you had enthusiasm, you were supposed to be possessed by a god or displaying religious emotion. With time we are going away from such “enthusiasm” and superstition. And with time, words are also developing new meanings. This week we’ll feature five words from the world of science that have also developed different meanings in day-to-day language.
