Fingers get pointed a lot in rescue and there sure are a hell of a lot of armchair rescuers out there. We all have the attitude of well, I would do it this way. Come on - you know it is true! A fellow rescuer was sent counterproductive messages tonight - not asking how they could help, or finding out the facts - but jumped right into the attack. You guys know that I tend to stay out of it, but I read the messages, and I was very bothered by what I read because it makes me worry about people who lump dogs by breed instead of understanding the needs of the animal, so here was my response - dont let someone bully you into second guessing doing right by the animal. I have one last thing to say - and this is more about rescue and the stigmas and stereotypes that are placed on dogs. A good rescuer understands that what holds true for one dog, is a different story for a different dog of the same breed. We dont always know their past. We understand that early exposure to things make a more rounded dog - one that has a better chance with other dogs, cats, etc. - so what if they were never introduced? What if they were born cat crazy? What if they were just born crazy? (Ive got a couple of those ) My point is this: saying all dogs of a certain breed can handle X sets the entire breed up for failure. All pit bulls will fight All dogos can learn to love cats All chihuahuas are sweet and harmless...
