Finished a book trilogy I had dug into on a first read-through, a mad and excited five day binge, spurred by travel, and ending at midnight. I still cant sleep. Devoted reading is what I imagine a severe drug or love addiction is like. I suppose all overwhelming compulsions are the same in principal, really. A rush of senses, endorphins and synapses carrying your flight of fancy into uncharted waters and unexplored peaks. Climaxing instantly, then unfortunately, and only appreciated in the sober aftermath of morning, once the conclusion has become something you think you knew all along. Oh, and when its good its good. That damn itch immediately returning once the faded epiphany has surpassed the come-down-guilt. Once that longing for mortal wisdom has returned, and the rush seems worth the effort even though the novelty is gone. Its how fans are born, junkies are made, and legacies are sealed. Its what happens when the product lives up to its promise, and the goods deliver. Work like this requires the ultimate sacrifice. It requires everything, all that a person is or ever will be. It requires selfishness, discipline, and the unenviable self-criticism that spurs honest work. Only great art transcends time and place. Time weeds out the unworthy. The talents that create these are rare. Not in their talent, but in their perseverance. Adulation and admiration can easily turn into apathy and dejection. It takes fanatic will to maintain determination. No creative ever feels comfortable. It takes a certain amount of insanity to internalize what you have learned from your betters. It takes unique audacity to turn something that inspired you into a lesson to draw from. It demands hours of trial and edit to finally feel comfortable in sharing what you have sacrificed yourself for. Im ready to share again. Im aching to work again. Im willing to believe again. Theres nothing as energizing as making a plan, resolving on a course of action, and setting out at dawn to capitalize on inspiration. What has inspired you lately? Id really like to know.
