Finished reading The Corrections. Heres a trend that really annoys me: the assumption that fiction is only deep and serious if its about terrible people portrayed in the most unsympathetic way possible. The same thing with serious TV. This might seem hypocritical of me since I love Dostoevsky, and he writes about murderers and terrorists, but Dostoevskys charm is that he has a certain sympathy for the characters that draws you into their crazy world while also being shocked at what theyre doing. The Corrections? Gary and Caroline have got to be the worst people Ive ever had the misfortune to read about. And if that was Franzens intention, then congratulations sir, youve managed to make a husband and wife having a domestic argument come off as more vile and undeserving of sympathy than a guy who murdered two old women.
