First Friday Fun Fact: In 1908 the Nebraska National Guard held a target encampment 2 1/2 miles northeast of Ashland on land known as Rose Island owned by Mrs. M.J. Rose. She rented the land to Nebraska for close to $1,000 for 1 year. That camp was originally known as William Poynter Camp. A rifle range was constructed and the facility was completed by July 1908. Every Nebraska National Guard unit used the range that summer. The Nebraska National Guard returned the following summer for more training but it took more than 5 years of lobbying the state legislature to finally purchase the land that became known as Camp Ashland. Between 1915 & 1917 over 700 acres were purchased from Alex Laverty and E. J. Rose for close to $20,000 with the option to purchase adjacent property.
