First one needs to understand that there are two main types of contaminates in water. Those things that are suspended solids and those that are dissolved solids. Suspended solids can be removed by filtration. Those contaminates that are dissolved can not be removed by conventional filtration! Additionally organic compounds and inorganic compounds occur naturally in water. Organic materials can be removed via carbon filtration. Carbon filtration also diminishes the danger of of microbiological contaminates, But, all waters suspected of having microbiological contamination should be sterilized prior to any and all filtration processes. Dissolved solids can be removed by distillation, or reverse osmosis. Some say that removing the natural salts from water is unhealthy, but the negligible amount of these materials that we get from drinking water is not a viable concern. You get more minerals from drinking a glass of milk than you typically would if you drank a swimming pool of water.
