First time I’ve really had time to sit down and write something - TopicsExpress

First time I’ve really had time to sit down and write something about Saturday night so here’s my take on it. It’s been great reading all the good stuff on Facebook about how Nathan and Lewis did on Saturday night in Scotland. It was one of them nights that will be remembered for a long time and I know one of those experiences where you could feel it was going to happen. One of the things that stood out for me was the spirit and belief that everybody involved had that these lads could do the job that was needed. We knew that Nathans first opponent (Craig Black) was one hard and fit lad who had a hell of a dig with 8 KO’s to his record but Nathan kept to the plan and worked to his strengths with great movement, counter striking and evasive work as well as working from the jab with some great body shots going in on the way. This fight was first fight of the night to enable the winner to rest for their next fight at the end of the evening. The result of the contest was a unanimous win for Nathan, well deserved. Lewis’s fight was a rematch from last year when the fight was declared a draw. His opponent (Sean Wanless) had experienced some good wins over the last year which had obviously given him confidence and experience. The fight was fairly even at times although Lewis started to use his sweeps to good effect he then dropped his opponent in the 5th round with a straight right hand which gave him a standing count, after that the fight belonged to Lewis and he was declared the winner with a unanimous verdict. Some people may of said we were mad for agreeing for Nathan to have 2 fights in one night for The British and the European titles,( the offer only came up the day before ) especially against 2 of the hardest hitters around at that weight, however we knew that Nathan had put a lot of hard work in over the last 8 weeks and his conditioning and recovery was spot on, also when I asked him on Friday if he wanted to do it he didn’t hesitate to say yes. I wouldn’t ask every fighter to consider this but knew if anybody was capable of doing this, Nathan was the man. His opponent was Steve White of Glasgow who was a strong switch hitting dangerous fighter. Remembering that Nathan has already fought 5 really hard rounds against Craig our game plan was to try and pace the first few rounds and pick the lad off with his front leg and straight punches, Steve White tried to spoil this from the start and wanted to go toe to toe with Nathan which saw some great work from both fighters with Nathan scoring some good clean shots , then at the end of the 4th Nathan kicked his opponent with a powerful front kick to the head, cutting his opponent with the referee then stopping it. TKO for Nathan! A great night for two great lads who are a pleasure to work with (well most of the time ). There’s also still a lot to come from these two young Kickboxers remembering that their only 20 and 21 years old and have spent most of this summer training hard. I’m not forgetting the rest of the full team around them who worked very closely with me on tactical work, technique, fitness and sparring. Martin Stobbs, Jamie Moore and Garry Nelson who are also a massive important part of the Kuei-Ling set up. Got to mention the supporters who travelled up and who could be heard throughout the fights, it means a lot to all of us to have support like that. This now takes us on to This Saturdays show at The Knack where we have 2 newer members of our squad in Andy Calvert and Simon Tate who are showing great promise with the commitment and skill they are showing at the Gym. We still have a few tickets left for the evening and these 2 fighters have put on great displays on their last outings and plan to do the same on Saturday. TKL !!
