First tragedy, then farce? On this day in 1958 their occurred the 19th Brumaire of Charles DeGaulle, the fourth successful coup since the Revolutione after Thermidor and the first two Brumaires, when a group of French military officers led a coup in Algiers demanding that a government of national unity be formed with Charles de Gaulle at its head in order to defend French control of Algeria. At that point, France seemed scheduled for a replay of the Spanish Civil War, launched also by a colonial army, but it managed to resolve the coup by a semi-constitutional assumption of power (which he ironically used to DESTROY the empire) Nonetheless, the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, the existentialist author and a noted atheist, was quoted as saying, when asked if he would vote for DeGaulle, “I would rather vote for God.” (the poverty of lesser evilism!) https://youtube/watch?v=5KRKpGGqlO0
