Firstly covering the language of this and the use of the word fracking There are 3 different ways that the word is used 1) it is common useage to use fracking to mean unconventional gas extraction which is all 3 types of extraction. UGE isnt very user-friendly to say, so people tend to use fracking as a catch-all phrase. 2) fracking is also in common useage again, to mean removal of the gas from the shale rock that is 3km below the ground, and this is a bit more accurate, as hydraulic fracturing IS part of the process for this. 3) Anyone technical, or from the drilling company or wanting to be 100%accurate and/or discredit you, will use fracking in its tiniest most specific sense, which is the fracturing of the rock using the explosive charges below ground So, everyone is right depending on how they intend the word to be used. Now - is fracking involved in CBM extraction? It can be. Sometimes it is, and sometimes it isnt, the specifics are going to depend on the company, and the site itself to some extent. So, lets get specific to Dart, and to the Upton site. Darts information says that they do not intend to use hydraulic fracture stimulation as part of this operation or in any part of CBM extraction So they key term here is DO NOT INTEND rather than they will not. The use of fracking chemicals requires an additional permit - and for this initial test stage, all they are doing is removing a plug of coal, so they will not be doing anything on site to extract gas from it. Just taking it away and analysing it in a laboratory. So if and when they use fracking chemicals, would be in a further stage when they are actually extracting gas. So - they say they do not intend to use them, but they have one site in Canonbie, Scotland where they actually have permission to use fracking chemicals in the extraction. So, if they want to try out adding chemicals to increase production rate, then they can do, they already have the permission (which was granted to the previous license holders Composite Energy and transferred over to them) As we know, Dart are struggling financially so I am assuming that there is some incentive to get as much gas out as they can. Finally, specific to the site - even if they do not use fracking on the CBM, Our site here also has shale underneath at a depth of about 3km, which Dart have rights to. So once the CBM is depleted, they will move into the shale, and that DOES involve fracking. So - the answer is yes, no, and maybe. If they dont use fracking now, they definitely will later on, where we are now is only the first step in a long line of plans for the area. Thjis is why we are saying NO now, once they are on site and the fields lost to industrial land, we will have no chance of getting them off. Say NO now, and keep saying NO, dont leave it til its too late to go back
