Five Man Cargo In 1968 a group of KGV school friends emigrated to Vancouver from Hong Kong. They had formed a rock band known as the Kontinentals and became quite famous in Hong Kong. They had their own weekly TV program and opened for acts like the Kinks, Manfred Mann, Lulu, Chubby Checker and many others.. When they arrived in Vancouver they changed their name to Five Man Cargo. They hired a little known manager at the time and they became the first band he ever managed. His name was Bruce Allen. Danny Piry, Gerald Laishley, John Telling, Orly Anderson and Sid Fattedad were their names. They found steady work at the Breakers in Point Roberts, the Marco Polo night club, Lasseters Den and played with the likes of visiting stars such as Ike and Tina Turner, Hermans Hermits and the Platters. They all had day jobs. Sid Fattedad (the drummer), had worked at KPMG (accounting work) in Hong Kong. He was making $35 a night at Lasseters Den and $200 a month at KPMG in Vancouver didnt compute for him. But one day Sid and a friend took a drive out to the airport and sat in their car watching the big birds land. He happened to see a Help Wanted sign posted at the entrance next to the gate of the CP Air administrative building and went inside. The rest is history! Sid gave up the itinerant life of a musician and spent the next 24 years working his way up the corporate ladder to become first ,VP in charge of the Pacific Region and then, VP for Quality Control. After he retired, when it looked like Canadian Airlines was going to merge with Air Canada, he came back to spear-head an employee backed buyout plan. Loved by all and still revered today, he has finally decided to tell the Insiders Story of the Rise and Fall of Canadian Airlines, a Canadian institution that was dear to the hearts of many Canadians.
