Five Years Given Hood; Guilty Plea Entered March 1937 Herman Hood, eighteen year-old Athens youth, was given a five year sentence in district court at Palestine Thursday afternoon when he entered a plea of guilty to the murder of Walter Johnson at Elkhart Lake in May, 1934. Hood shot Johnson after the latter had killed his father. Attorney W. D. Justice, of Athens, represented Hood and through a plea agreement with states attorneys that cases is now pending in Henderson County against the youth, would be concurrent if sentence is given, agreed to the guilty plea and accepted a sentence of five years. The youth is already under sentence in Smith County and will have to serve some six years and eleven months in the two cases. The cases here will be tried but sentence, if given, will run concurrent with the Palestine sentence. The first twelve men on the special venire were selected and then the plea of guilty entered.
