Fix it in the mix is generally something I dont agree with, - TopicsExpress

Fix it in the mix is generally something I dont agree with, especially when Im also the recording engineer on a project. But sometimes, due to budget & gear limitations, I dont have a choice. I recorded this song in a rehearsal space (maybe a 15 x 20 room). There was no sound proofing and their were other bands playing in different rooms as I recorded the band. The room smelled like cigarettes and beer. :) Gear: Boss BR-8 Mackie 402-VLZ3 4-Channel Mixer 2 Rode NT2as 2 SM58s 1 SM-7 We had 4 mics for drums. The BR-8s only had 2 inputs so we had a small 4 channel Mackie mixer to get the OHs, kick, and snare down to 2 tracks. I did have to add some samples in the mix to enhance the kick, snare, and toms. The drummer played to a click. I think he played the song twice and we chose the best performance. The guitars were recorded with an sm58 into the BR-8 (4 tracks total). Bass was direct from the amp head to the BR-8. Everything was setup and recorded in about 3 hours. Then the vocalist recorded vox in his closet with a SM7 into the BR-8. Mixed completely ITB. The song isnt the greatest so I had to be creative with a few things. Muting the bass towards the end and some different effects and tons of automation. Just wanted to share because sometimes the end result with low-end projects can turn out surprisingly well if you know what youre doing. I actually love working with minimal gear because I enjoy the challenge. Got any similar projects to share? Share them!
