Florettfechten -- Jake, Hayley, etc. we had been talking about some people to watch. Here is a totally different kind of fencing from Ota or the Italians -- meet multiple word champion Peter Joppich (you have already met him, he got the point from between the legs.) Joppich is a small guy but he fences long -- his game, unlike a lot of people in the post-2005 era, still involves a lot of long aggressive attacks. He does not do a lot of complicated blade actions, his game is about timing and athleticism -- he uses a lot of body fakes and long fleches, often with multiple remises. One thing to note, how aggressive he is, forcing the action. Also, how he sets the timing not so much through blade actions (though he does use them) but his body, he drops his center of gravity a lot, sometimes he does nothing, sometimes he attacks out of it, sometimes he actually pulls. Sometimes, like the point at :30, he drops his body weight down, comes in fast but takes a parry-riposte on counter-time. He also has a crazy good counterattack, he tries one here in this short clip but goes off target. His speed makes people close fast and he punishes them by faking backwards, a search to get them to hesitate and then changing direction and scoring with the counter. Also, relatively little in-fighting for a guy who is 54 fencing a dude who is 62. This is kind of a different type of foil, and one that people like Nick might look at -- it really uses the speed and distance and is less reliant on getting close and making it a contest of bladework.
