Floridas Baker Act allows the involuntary institutionalization and examination of an individual. It can be initiated by judges, law enforcement officials, physicians, or mental health professionals. It is intended to protect individuals against a harm to self, or harm to others. Unfortunately, the reality of Floridas Baker Act has its share of unintended negative applications, complications, and results, often to the great detriment of individual rights of those drawn into the system and often to the shock and dismay of families and loved-ones of those drawn into the system. An internal Investigation has been launched after a Sanford Police officer recently took an autistic 9-year-old from his school for a confined hospital psychiatric evaluation.
