Flying from Johannesburg to Cairo in three weeks! Weve just arrived at Musina near the border of Zimbabwe, having ridden the last day along the Limpopo River, about two months in total from Cape Town on about 90% unpaved roads, walking paths, and donkey tracks. After some characteristically impulsive and honest deliberation, weve decided to jump ship and fly north for the rest of the season to time ourselves with some much-anticipated riding in Israel, Turkey, and eventually Georgia, with time in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Armenia also planned. We are flying from Joburg to Cairo on Jan 18. Tickets cost just over $300 and bikes fly free up to 30kg on Qatar Air, so it was not a difficult decision for us. Weve been vying to visit Turkey and Georgia for several seasons now, but the timing was never quite right. The intense heat and humidity of the past few weeks, along with a realized apathy towards the prospect of cycling through central Africa in the summer set all of this decision making in motion. Were really excited to have spent the time in South Africa, Lesotho, and Swaziland, and really excited to be moving on.
