Folks, every man or woman who served their country deserves any and every pat on the back they get. But weve had some unsung heroes from here who served in positions of a very delicate nature and certainly never asked for any sort of recognition. My good friend, the late Charlie Dawson who grew up in the Corinth Community, was in a unit in Viet Nam that went out on some very hairy missions which included only about a half dozen to eight men. Theyd go out, seek, search, and destroy so to speak for days or weeks at a time, crawling through the jungle, rice paddies, etc. Charlie said when theyd get back to camp all were on edge. One can only imagine as these guys never knew from one minute to the next if theyd see the next minute. Charlie told me of a story when they were back in camp, debriefing. In the HQ was a series of cubicles where the walls only went up 7 feet. Some guy kept tossing wadded up paper over into the cubicle where Charlie and his group were sitting. Again, they were fighting men whod seen it all and were on edge and prepared to fight at the drop of the hat. Finally, Charlie said he got tired of the horse play and decided to go around the corner and put a stop to this clown throwing wadded up paper over into their meeting. To his surprise, he found another Winn Parish boy (intelligence officer) who had learned Charlie was in the group so he was messing with Charlie, tossing the paper over to irritate him. Charlie said he was so happy to see a familiar face they grabbed each other, hugged, and had a good old Winn Parish reunion. I did not mention the intelligence officers name out of respect (hes deceased now) as no one other than his family, Charlie, and I knew of his particular service. I asked him about it one day and he laughed and said, you know Charlie tells tall tales. Some years later we talked about it and he finally admitted it was true but he did not want anyone to know about him or what he did. Another hero indeed.
