Following largely chaotic and flawed democratic pasts, both #Malawi and #GuineaBissau are on the threshold of new democratic eras. But with the former one of the poorest nations on earth, with donors proving 40% of the country’s budget, and the latter plagued by corruption and drug trafficking, electing new leaders is only the start of the battle. The emergence of elections as an institutionalised and central feature of African politics has unfortunately not been accompanied by sufficient government accountability.
