Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and other stakeholders on Thursday banned staging of football matches at night. The move is geared towards enhancing security at football matches countrywide, coming in the wake of last Saturday’s terror attack by outlawed Somalia terror group Al- Shabaab at a popular at Nairobi shopping mall which left 67 people dead and over 175 injured. The decision to ban the night matches and bolster security in Kenyan stadia was taken during stakeholders meeting in Nairobi, chaired by FKF President Sam Nyamweya and attended by KPL CEO Jack Oguda, Sports Stadia Management Board representatives. "We are going to hold talks with the top security organs in the country as we seek to have a special police unit trained to take care of sports and events. This unit will receive specialized training and handling crowds at our stadiums. No matches will kick off past 5 pm in the evening and the ban starts with Friday’s Tusker Premier League matches, that must kick off not later than 5 pm," Nyamweya said in a joint statement. The meeting also resolved to do away with unregistered and unscreened club security stewards, saying that immediate effect the security marshals, will be restricted to 50 per club and, who must be bearers of Certificate of Good Conduct issued by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). ”As you are aware, we have allowed AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia to deploy club scouts during KPL matches involving their teams, but from now on, the club scouts, must be thoroughly screened and bearers of Certificate of Good Conduct from the CID,” Nyamweya told the media. The move is geared toward tightening security at all football venues countrywide and removing undesirable elements and strangers who could be harbouring criminal intentions from football venues. The meeting also banned fans from milling around match venues, especially stadium gates, saying people who have no business at the gates will be removed . ‘’Tickets will be sold away or a reasonable distance from the match venues to enhance security at football stadia,” Nyamweya said reminding Kenyans that each and every citizen has a role to play in the enhancing security in the country. The meeting also banned parking of private vehicles inside the Nairobi City Stadium, saying only service providing vehicles such as fire engines, ambulances and police vehicles will be allowed to park in the stadium. Mathare United chairman Bob Munro said that the premier league management body will provide numbered jackets to to club marshals.
