For 50 years, the one solid block of Hispanic voters that Republicans could count on was the expatriate Cuban population of Florida. As long as memories of Kennedys Bay of Pigs betrayal lingered in the minds of the Cuban community, conservatives could count on their vote. Times have changed, however, and the younger Cuban population has softened on the idea of the embargo and have become more concerned with broader social and economic issues. This new electoral attitude will be tested this fall as Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist appeals directly to the new Cuban voters by promising to lift the trade restrictions. The case for lifting the embargo is pretty simple. After all this time, it has failed to topple the Castro regime and isnt likely to do so any time soon. What will the Republican response be? Just give it four more years, then the Castro government will fall? Given the history, this seems like an illogical idea but Republicans have been known to embrace illogical positions in the name of ideology. Their strict adherence to the principle of opposing Communism and Castro does not allow them the flexibility to adapt to changing times and changing demographics. In other words, they are going to try to win again in 2014 just like its 1964. Good luck with that.
