For Ferguson... Family, I spent the afternoon with my grandson - TopicsExpress

For Ferguson... Family, I spent the afternoon with my grandson supporting him through his first blood draw experience. We talked a lot about how strong he is and how the needle prick would be quick. He tried to believe me but he was afraid. He held on really tight to my neck and said, Grandma please dont let them hurt me. All of my heart felt those words, not just for Ajamu, but also for all of our children who are suffering violence from a system that was not designed to bring them an equal opportunity for success and prosperity and then vilifies them for finding alternative ways to survive. What can we do to stop them from being hurt, jailed and killed? I dont want to make war because of the grand jury decision in Ferguson. I hope you dont either. More of our children will suffer. A violent reaction will simply give an excuse for abuse. I want to call upon all of the traditional and nontraditional African American organizations from the NAACP to the House and Ball Culture to gather ourselves in conversation. We need a strategy not a street fight. We needed this Ferguson energy during the midterm elections. Those are the places were real change is made. Keep your fire but direct it toward lasting change. Who we put in the White House next is critical. Cant you see where this is going? My grandson said to me after his ordeal, Was I a good boy Grandma. I really tried hard. In that moment I heard the voice of our young people with so few opportunities calling us to sit at the table until we create a better world. Time for action, not just reaction! Weve done it before in Selma, Birmingham, Soweto and Stonewall! We must do it again! We needed something to galvanize us. God moves in meticulous ways. Michaels death will not be in vain. We will hold his family up in prayer.I received an invitation this evening about an emergency political strategy conference call with several elected officials. Change is in the air. It was no accident that I have been called to the White House this weekend then to a gathering of Pastors from all over the country in Maryland. We will not let this travesty pass. We will not be driven into the shadows again.
