For Immediate Release Kalona, Iowa Pop Up Holiday Market Now Open at Old Mill Marketplace The Friends of Bunker Mill Bridge are proud to announce that the Holiday Market has popped up at Old Mill Marketplace near Bunker Mill Bridge in Kalona, IA. The Marketplace will be open on Tuesday evenings, 5-7 pm and on Saturdays at noon through the holidays. This pop up market is open through Christmas. The stores merchandise comes from the collection of Scott Allen, Executive Director of Friends of Bunker Mill Bridge. This was an opportunity to continue our fundraising plans and try to market our collection of holiday items, many from our previous store and from my collecting habits in Kalona, stated Allen. The other part of my collection is currently on display at the Kalona Historical Village through the holidays. The items showcased at the bridge consigned to Old Mill Marketplace represent some fun ornaments, home decor, art and collectibles... come on out and see, it really is quite festive. This is a great opportunity to continue to grow the Old Mill Marketplace which was created with an historic 1931 steel line shack building donated by the Carl Chadek Trucking Service Inc. and the family of Carl and Frieda Chadek of Iowa City. A $2500 donation from Jeannette Fulton the daughter of Carl and Frieda, was just received by the Friends and is to be used to commemorate and support the building. We used a portion to bring in power to the site and the rest to provide for the continued maintenance and movability of the structure, one of the rules for being in the flood plain, stated Julie Bowers, Executive Director of Workin Bridges who is helping to manage the store project. These bridge projects are difficult to fund and we have to be very creative to continue our planning for the long term. The Friends of Bunker Mill Bridge will create their own member driven organization by the end of 2015 (or whenever the bridge is finished). It is important that they have a strong foundation for fundraising for the continued operation of the area which they signed onto when the bridge was obtained for preservation. Its not easy, but in this culturally diverse area, we have to make sure that the crossing can be utilized by many, including horses and buggies, atvs, bicycles, pedestrians and those wanting to stop to picnic or fish. Its a great site and we are happy to have helped to preserve it. Anyone interested in hosting their own pop up store are encouraged to contact Allen. We are looking at potential space for an artist gallery opening, plans for a monthly flea market Second Saturdays, and the continuation of Almost Acoustic Tuesdays are planned for 2015. Allen adds, We didnt receive any funding from the Riverboat Foundation again this round, the third time was not the charm, but we are committed to finishing the bridge correctly and according to the engineers plans. If we had $100,000 in hand we would we well under construction. We are asking for help from all sources to assist in getting it done, but in the meantime we have created quite a destination. The Holiday Market is open daily by chance or by calling Scott at 319.458.0442 or Julie at 641.260.1262. Or hale us at Old Mill Marketplace at Bunker Mill Bridge on Facebook. All credit cards, checks or cash accepted and we will mail if you see something you like from the pictures of the inventory.
