For Jim Rome: 38 United States Army Band members have earned the Congressional Medal of Honor. Army Band members are Soldiers first. Many of my Army Band friends are combat veterans. One has a piece of his shoulder missing from a wound he got while he served in the Vietnam War. I served in one of six Army Bands that were in harms way in the Gulf War. Each Band and Band member had several varying missions. I led and trained a quick reactionary force that was prepared to defend Commanding General Franks of VII Corps in case VII Corps HQ was attacked. I also manned a machine gun defensive position. I had many duties. I saw dead and wounded American Soldiers at a scud missile attack site. When I first joined the Army I was in the 214th Army Band. Here is a piece of their history: The Army Ground Forces Band was organized as the Fourth Infantry Regiment Band on July 21, 1845 in New Orleans, La. Its heritage includes twenty-six campaign streamers and the French Croix de Guerre with Gilt Star. The history of this unique band began with the Mexican War, where its members fought heroically, becoming the only Army band to receive a combat distinction from the President of the United States. On September 21, 1846 during the Battle of Monterrey, members of the band captured an enemy artillery battery and turned it against the Mexican army. In recognition of this heroic action, President Zachary Taylor, who had commanded the Fourth Infantry Regiment during the war, authorized the band to wear red piping on its dress uniforms, commemorating its distinguished wartime service. I could go on and on with more examples but instead I would love to see Jim Rome just try to finish one week of training with DCIs Phantom Regiment let alone an entire season.
