(3) Briefly lay out the aims and methods of Placename Study as a branch of Folklore. (4) Talk to me about examples of material culture we have looked at and how they can be read as texts indicating the warp and woof of past and present lives. (5) An important folk and literary motif is The Pilgrimage. Dilate on two important examples of this from your studies this semester. (6) Keats 1818 poem La Belle Dame Sans Mercy and Elizabeth Bowens 1945 short story The Demon Lover share a fascination with faerie. Compare these strange creatures pulling the strings from behind the curtain of both tales. AND: You must memorize your answer and write it fresh on the exam booklet. No notes or books may be consulted during the exam.
