For People in Recovery Every person deserves to lead a successful and satisfied life. Living with mental illness does not preclude you from successfully living and working in the community, enjoying an active social life, attending school, practicing your faith, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle—all while managing your own illness with the supports you may need. We are committed to promoting recovery, full community integration and improved quality of life for persons who have been diagnosed with any mental health condition that seriously impairs functioning. We believe that psychiatric rehabilitation services are collaborative, person directed, and individualized—and certainly an essential element of the human services spectrum. The focus of psychiatric rehabilitation services is on helping individuals rediscover skills and access resources needed to increase their capacity to be successful and satisfied in the living, working, and learning environments of their choice. Our goal at USPRA is to ensure that you are receiving services that are effectively supporting you in your journey to recovery—and one way to do that is to ensure that these services are being delivered properly. USPRA has developed a series of policy documents that all psychiatric rehabilitation service providers should be guided and governed by: Definition of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Code of Ethics Multicultural Principles Language Guidelines We also encourage you to request that all services you receive reflect USPRA’s Core Principles and Values: · Strength ‐ based: Psychiatricrehabilitation practices build on the strengths and capabilities ofindividuals. · Person-centered:Psychiatric rehabilitationpractices are designed to address the unique needs of individuals, consistentwith their values, hopes and aspirations. · Empowerment: Psychiatricrehabilitation practices promote self‐determination andempowerment. All individuals have the right to make their own decisions,including decisions about the types of services and supports they receive. · Shared-Decision Making: Psychiatric rehabilitationpractitioners engage in the processes of informed and shared decision‐makingand facilitates partnerships with other persons identified by the individualreceiving services. · Evidence-based: Psychiatric rehabilitation servicesemphasize evidence‐based, promising, and emerging best practices that produceoutcomes congruent with personal recovery. Programs include structured programevaluation and quality improvement mechanisms that actively involve personsreceiving services. · Quality of Life: Psychiatricrehabilitation practices strive to help individuals improve the quality of allaspects of their lives; including social, occupational, educational,residential, intellectual, spiritual and financial. · Community Integration: Psychiatricrehabilitation practices support full integration of people in recovery intotheir communities where they can exercise their rights of citizenship, as wellas to accept the responsibilities and explore the opportunities that come withbeing a member of a community and a larger society. · Culturally relevant: Psychiatricrehabilitation practitioners recognize that culture is central to recovery, andstrive to ensure that all services are culturally relevant to individuals receivingservices. · Personal Support Network: Psychiatric rehabilitationpractices facilitate the development of personal support networks by utilizingnatural supports within communities, peer support initiatives, and self‐ andmutual‐help groups. · Health & Wellness: Psychiatric rehabilitationpractices promote health and wellness, encouraging individuals to develop anduse individualized wellness plans. · Accessible & Coordinated: Psychiatric rehabilitationservices must be readily accessible to all individuals whenever they need them.These services also should be well coordinated and integrated with otherpsychiatric, medical, and holistic treatments and practices. · Hope & Respect: Psychiatric rehabilitationpractitioners convey hope and respect, and believe that all individuals havethe capacity for learning and growth. Additionally, you should request that all services you receive are being delivered by a professional holding USPRA’s Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner (CPRP) credential. Practitioners are distinguished professionals who have mastered the principles of psychiatric rehabilitation and understand how to implement them in practice. This ensures the delivery of the most professional psychiatric rehabilitation services that will effectively support you in your journey to recovery.
