For anyone seriously interested in the background to the development of the Strathspey and its timing two recent papers by Dr Will Lamb in Scottish Studies vols 36 and 37 are worth reading. The first is titled Reeling in the Strathspey: The Origins of Scotlands National Music and the second a follow up called Grafting Culture: On the Development and Diffusion of the Strathspey in Scottish Music. Both can be found online either at his Edinburgh University page or on the academia.edu/ site.
