For better or worse the culture of self-defense is fixated firmly - TopicsExpress

For better or worse the culture of self-defense is fixated firmly on the gun as the solution, when in reality it is only a tool WE utilize. A short but good article on the neglect of viewing training as the most important aspect of self-defense readiness. In my work in gun sales, I see this almost daily where people just seem to be convinced that simply having a gun is the pinnacle of self-defense preparedness. Although that can get you through a situation where an attacker is not what we call dedicated to his cause, it will not suffice if you encounter the dedicated ones. As an instructor, I have trained countless individuals who have been shooting guns all their lives, but when introduced to the very different science of self-defense or reactive shooting they experience a very noticeable reality check of what they are actually capable of doing. The introduction of factors like varying distance, time limit, high stress and distractions will take your average target shooting skills and burn them to ashes right in front of you, leaving you a trembling mess relying on tunnel vision, limited hearing, untested equipment and ultimately untrained gross motor skills to manipulate your weapon. ~ Varg Freeborn
