For friends out there who hadnt yet heard, a week and a half ago I was diagnosed with bladder cancer - a day before going on vacation (and off the grid) to Tennessee. I had a really amazing time there, and am grateful for a lot of processing that people there helped me through. It was actually kinda the perfect place to be before coming home. I had surgery yesterday. They were able to remove the tumor, which was small, and injected my bladder with a medication that is essentially chemotherapy and will reduce the likelihood of it coming back. However, while it probably wont spread, I have a kind that is likely to eventually come back. Ill know more next week after a follow up - but will have to deal with this the rest of my life. I didnt think that at 31 years old I would have cancer. While its impossible to say what really caused it, I cant deny that smoking made my chances of getting it astronomically higher. Ill admit it - I liked smoking. I really did. But Ill never touch another cigarette again after the surgery yesterday. Everybody knows about cancer and smoking and I used to hate hearing about it, and hearing people be preachy about it, and all the stupid PSA ads about it. But things change real fast when you are actually diagnosed with a tumor. So if you do smoke, Im urging you to stop before you get to where I am. I think Ill be ok - my diagnosis sounds pretty good - and Im grateful for all the love and support Ive had from friends and family so far. Life is too short - make the most of it, connect, love and support each other, and above all - take good care of yourselves.
