For my upcoming presentation on Civil War High Tech at our Nashua City Library this Sunday, I dug my 1/25 scale model of the Civil War locomotive General out of storage. The display is 26 long and I put a real RR spike by it for scale. I had to do quite a few small repairs on parts that had broken off and now it is ready. The kit is based on the Great Locomotive Chase which began on April 12, 1862 at Big Shanty (Now Kennesaw) Ga. when 20 Union soldiers led by two civilians stole a train from behind Rebel lines and headed North to Chattanooga, Tn. A wood-fired 4-4-0 the real thing is now in a museum This exciting event was the subject of the 1926 Buster Keaton silent movie The General. Walt Disney made a movie in 1956 with Fess Parker. Of the 22 men, all were captured, 7were hanged, 8 escaped and 6 remained POWs after trials by military courts and being charged with Acts of unlawful belligerency. The Civil War has many such amazing but true stories worth recalling!
