For one year, when I was in the 2nd grade, my mom and I lived in a small one bedroom apartment. She was still married to my dad who, as a civil servant working for the EPA, was getting transferred every 1-2 years meaning we would have to disassemble and then recreate our lives over and over and (as I learned from her, many years later) she said Not this time... So, he was living in North Carolina. I remember watching the news, on our little black/white TV where they would put the # dead in VietNam that day up in the top right corner of the screen. The way the vets from that war were treated upon their return, the shredding of the utopian ideal of our government (JFK assassination and Nixons resignation) is all a big mishmash in my childhood memory timeline. Im thinking that we self-corrected and shifted our social consciousness with regards to veterans during The Gulf War/Shock & Awe Era by uber welcoming them home from THAT surreal to us civilians video game conflict. My parents immigrated to this country as children, post WWII ... my stepfathers older relatives had concentration camp prisoner #s tattooed on their forearms that I noticed when I was introduced to them at temple in Cleveland, OH. WAR was a part of life and held a mysterious reverence to me then. Decades later, those veils have been lifted and the onslaught of information regarding the devious contrivances and Machiavellian mindset of the elite has divided us into several camps. The top two being Jaded or Patriotic. I cant imagine how an individual, along with their loved ones, can risk everything without adopting a belief system, whether personal or tribal, that preserves integrity and gives comfort and purpose to justify overwhelming sacrifice and loss. So, what I feel on VETERANS DAY, as a mature woman in todays world is simply a profound sense of empathy, compassion and gratitude that they do that and go there, so I have the leisure to know so much and complain about it, hope and push a different, yet unrealistic, agenda of mans HUMANITY to man.
