For those following the Tour and the numbers, watts/Kg starts to be less useful of a metric as the riders climb at the higher altitudes. Given the lack of oxygen it is harder for riders to reach a wattage which would considered "threshold". (Meaning, I can put out more watts at sea level than I can at the top of a mountain). So, other metrics have been created, the most common of which is "VAM" - "Velocità Ascensionale Media" or in English "Mean ascent velocity".
