For those of you who have asked us questions through #AskaVet, we have the answers for you! Dr. Matthews has answered your questions about reproduction! We answered one question yesterday and now is time for another answer! *When is the ideal age to geld a colt? The ideal age is best determined by the horses owner rather than the veterinarian. From a veterinary perspective, it is certainly best after the testicles have descended fully into the scrotum which can vary but usually occurs in their first year of life. The considerations that the owner must consider is how will remaining an intact male affect the temperament and masculine appearance of the individual. As a very general rule, the later a horse is castrated, the more masculine his appearance will be and the less likely his temperament will mellow as a result of the castration.
