For those who are questioning all of this Pope hoopla, we have to bear in mind two points: (1) We are welcoming not just a religious leader. We are welcoming a head of state. Thats the reason why we have all this pomp and circumstance. Even if the Pope himself doesnt prefer formalities like these, its part of international protocol - and the Vatican diplomatic corps pre-approved these formalities; and (2) The reason for all of these preparations is because the government knows that this particular leader will attract millions of people in the streets - even if there was no declaration of special holidays. The government needed to plan this out carefully (e.g. no fly zones, road closures, rerouting, public holiday, interruption of mobile services) - in the same way the government had to make preparations for major celebrations of other religious sects. As for the hysteria, that is a spontaneous thing- coming from the hearts of millions of Catholics. Dont question their intentions. They waited all day for a 5-second glimpse of the Pope. The government didnt order that. Bear in mind, the last time a Pope was here was 20 years ago. And we dont know when the next Papal visit will be. No amount of FB status posts will be able to stop people from expressing their love.
