For those who were wondering about Gabbys tubes and possible - TopicsExpress

For those who were wondering about Gabbys tubes and possible upcoming surgery. Her current tubes are cecostomy (large intestine and has a Big Bird pad) and her gtube (feeding tube that goes into her stomach & has a snowman pad). Thw cecostomy is to flush her bowels because they dont work on their own. The GI dr and surgeon is thinking about taking it out and replacing it with an ileostomy which would be in her ileum of her small intestine. They would take out part of her large intestine/colon (I believe) and disconnect it from rectum. She would have a small bag attached to her abdomen for all her stools and air to flow freely into it and i would empty it periodically throughout the day. Her gtube would possibly be changed to a gj which it would still go into same place but would also have a long thin tube that would go from inside her stomach to her jejunum (in the small intestine). Her surgeon is wanting to do another test before doing the surgery to be sure theres not something simpler he could do to help her. The reason for doing whatever he decides is best is because she keeps having gi problems where he gi system just a stops working and we have to go impatient for iv fluids for 3-7 days or until her gi system decides it wants to start moving and working again. She has slow motility or gastroparesis which means that her stomach empties very slowly. Doing this surgery or something else will hopefully make hrr feel better ans greatly cut down on inpatient stays at the hospital. We are not sure if it will but its possibly the best thing we can do to try. Again surgery is not set in stone as she will have testing done before a final decision is made on how to proceed. There is still the possibility that she could end up having to be put on TPN which is where she would be fed through a central line and we will only do that as a last resort. TPN has bad side effects and I absolutely dont want that for her unless its the only thing left.
