For those wondering how Brian is doing, here is an update: We saw the orthopedic surgeon today. He has at least a 3 part fracture of the tibial plateau (extending into the joint surface of his knee). The CT scan he had today will help give a more complete picture of the injury and bone fragments involved. Surgery is scheduled for Wednesday. His injury was last Tuesday, but the doctor explained why they wait so long with this type of fracture (which is a fairly rare fracture). It is because of the extent of soft tissue damage and swelling. If they opened him up right away, they would not be able to close the tissues. Sometimes they even have to wait up to two weeks! If that would have been the case, they would have placed an external fixator. A week has been torment to sit with this unset fracture. I cant imagine another week. Right now, he is popping lots of pain pills, and still having quite a bit of pain. We are expecting to be at St. Alexius for 2-3 days, depending on his post op pain, etc. He will be in very good hands with St. Alexius and Dr. Chad Carlson. The doctor explained that he will not be able to fully bear weight on this leg for three months. The tibia plateau is a critical load bearing area. Long term we may have some issues with joint problems, arthritis etc. I know a helmet would not have saved him from this injury... but ****motorcyclists PLEASE wear your helmets****. This REALLY sucks, but I cant stop thinking about everything that could have happened. We love our men (and women riders/drivers), and we want to keep them safe.
